MCP

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open protocol that standardizes how AI models and agents connect to external tools and data: file systems, databases, browsers, internal APIs.

How it works: an MCP server exposes a set of tools (and optionally resources and prompts) over a simple interface. Any MCP client — an IDE, an agent framework, a chat app — can discover and call those tools without custom integration code.

Why it matters:

  • Portability — one server works across clients and frameworks.
  • Composability — small focused servers beat one giant plugin system.
  • Ecosystem — a fast-growing directory of community servers.

Where to start: a filesystem server, a search server, and a server for your own database. See the Agents & MCP pillar and our news on the MCP ecosystem.
